Notes from Meetup #24: Steel City Twins

Notes from Meetup #24: Steel City Twins

We were back in the Diamond Building for the first time since before the pandemic, courtesy of the Department of Computing at the University of Sheffield, who were our host sponsors for this, the 24th edition on the SmartSheffield Meetup.

The theme this time round was Digital Twins & all things simulation and visualisation.

Our speakers were:

  • Prof John Clark and Dr Aryan Pasikhani, from the Security of Advanced Systems Group at the University of Sheffield, on: "Security of Digital Twins".

  • Katie Steele, founder of Cheribim, on: "Digital Twins: a turning point in historic building fabric assessment".

  • Dr Robert Harwood, CEO of Slingshot Simulations, on: "Digital Twins for Place-Based Net Zero and Climate Resilience - Lessons from Product Design".

  • Dr James Douthwaite, from Sheffield Robotics at the University of Sheffield, on: "Challenges in Robotic Digital Twin Implementation".

  • Emmanuel Lwele, from National Centre of Excellence in Food Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, on: "AI-based surrogate models of digital twins for food & drink manufacturing systems"

The videos from our five excellent speakers are embedded below, along with my regular SmartSheffield News update, or you can watch them all directly on YouTube in this handy playlist.

Thanks to them, and to everyone who attended!

Thanks, alaso to our hosts at the University of Sheffield, and our other sponsors at SHU, Arup and Sheffield Digital.:

Please sign up to receive updates about our future events, and hopefully I’ll see you at one soon.

Prof John Clark and Dr Aryan Pasikhani

“Security of Digital Twins

Prof John Clark and Dr Aryan Pasikhani, from the Security of Advanced Systems Group at the University of Sheffield, introduced a comprehensive framework for securing digital twins across a wide range of use cases. Beginning with a general overview of what we understand digital twins to be, and then explaining in detail how different threats have the potential to impact each of the 6 components of a digital twin.

Katie Steele

Digital Twins: a turning point in historic building fabric assessment"

Katie is the founder of Cheribim a startup that provides auditing and asset management for historic buildings, and in this, her second talk at SmartSheffield, she explains how her Cheribim has developed since her last appearance in 2021. In particular she reports the on progress of their current project which is funded by InnovateUK under the "Net Zero Heat: rapid assessment of building fabric performance" competition.

Dr Robert Harwood

“Digital Twins for Place-Based Net Zero and Climate Resilience"

Robert is the founder & chief executive of Slingshot Simulations, a firm he describes as a "decision intelligence" provider _ particularly to cities and other places that need to better understand their interconnected systems and the impacts of policy decisions on sustainability and behaviours. In this talk, Robert provides a snapshot of the current state of play in this field, and provides insights from the last 20 years of place-based modelling.

Dr James Douthwaite

"Challenges in Robotic Digital Twin Implementation"

James is a Research Associate in Collaborative Robotics at Sheffield Robotics at the University of Sheffield, and the research group he is part of helps their industrial partners build sophisticated robotic environments to act as visualisations, simulations and full interactive digital twins. Over the last four years the team have developed the Twinality Project - a pipeline to maximise knowledge exchange in robotics applications.

Emmanuel Lwele

“AI-based surrogate models of digital twins for food & drink manufacturing systems"

Emmanuel is a doctoral researcher at the National Centre of Excellence in Food Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, and in this short talk he explains how his team is exploring the potential of digital twins for improving efficiency and sustainability in the food processing industry, using a virtual model of rice milling machinery as a jumping off point.

SmartSheffield News for January 2024

Chris Dymond, founder of Unfolding and co-founder of Sheffield Digital, presents his usual roundup of news across the city - not all of it directly involves technology or smart city-ness, nor is it a comprehensive review of everything that's happening, but it's things that are relevant to people who are interested in the development of the city and technology's role in it.
