Notes from Meetup #20: IoT In Da House - In-building Tech
It was truly wonderful to be back in our spiritual home in Arup's event space on the top floor of 3 St. Paul's Place for our 20th Edition of the meetup!
The last time we were there was in September 2019 for the Air Quality Special (which is very much still worth checking out!), and even though my partner Matt Proctor no longer works for Arup and is no longer involved in organising the meetup, we were very ably assisted by Neil Hooton, Charlotte Thompson and Derek Roberts, and it felt like hardly any time had elapsed in the interim at all.
A special shout out, too, to Alice Vickers who helped me get all the tech up and running, which I have to say worked absolutely impeccably. Apart from me forgetting to switch Pierre's microphone on for the first couple of minutes, everything went completely smoothly, including our first ever livestream to the Unfolding YouTube channel!
Anyway, enough of the logistics, the theme for this edition was to look at in-building technologies and to hear from some local, and not so local, practitioners about how data is being gathered, for what purposes and how it's being used. We enjoyed excellent talks from:
Dr. Pierre Drezet, Smart-IoT systems engineer at inx, on "Time-shifting Domestic Electricity Consumption for Greener and Cheaper Supply".
Maria-Lida Kounadi, Senior Smart Buildings Engineer/Product Manager at Arup, on "Property Insights".
Falk Bleyl, CTO and co-founder at Utopi, on "The case for granular data: Averages hide detail".
Alex Kelly, IOT and data specialist at Tinsley Bridge, on "IOT in a Factory".
Followed by my regular SmartSheffield News roundup.
You can watch all of these talks via this YouTube Playlist, or embedded below along with the slide decks.
Many thanks again to Arup for hosting and catering, it was great to see so many people out enjoying the weather and the view from the top of 3 St Paul’s Place. Thanks as well to those who watched online and commented - I think this is the format we’ll stick to in future. And thanks as always to our other sponsors at The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Digital.
We haven’t scheduled the next event just yet, but it’s likely to be first Monday in October, so please pencil that date in.
And have a fantastic Summer in the meantime!
Dr. Pierre Drezet from inx
"Time-shifting Domestic Electricity Consumption for Greener and Cheaper Supply"
Pierre is a Director and Smart-IoT systems engineer at inx, and in this talk he discusses the potential for using hot water for energy storage in order to timeshift energy consumption to smooth out grid demand and better utilise energy from renewables.
Maria-Lida Kounadi from Arup
"Property Insights"
Maria-Lida is a Senior Smart Buildings Engineer and Product Manager at Arup and in this talk she discusses the complex contemporary landscape of building data, and presents Property Insights, Arup's IoT data platform that combines and aggregates data from a multitude of sources and produces simple, useful visualisations for building managers.
Falk Bleyl from Utopi
"The case for granular data: Averages hide detail"
Falk is CTO and co-founder at Utopi, which builds technology platforms for gathering Environmental data from multi-tenancy buildings, for reporting as part of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) requirements.
Alex Kelly from Tinsley Bridge Group
"IOT in a Factory"
Alex is an IoT and data specialist at Tinsley Bridge Group, which is a large local engineering and manufacturing firm, established in the 1850s. Alex describes his ongoing work to measure what is actually happening in such a large factory complex - from the temperature of large quenching tanks, to noise levels around specific machines.
